That changes which details matter. In practice, wind almost never lifts a shingle out of the middle of a roof plane. It gets underneath an edge first and then peels inward. Which means the parts of the job that decide whether your roof survives a 60 mph gust are the least glamorous parts:
- Starter course. A proper factory starter strip at eaves and rakes, with its adhesive band positioned correctly. Cutting up field shingles to fake a starter course is common, cheap, and the single most reliable predictor of blow-off we see.
- Nailing pattern and placement. Six nails per shingle rather than four in high-wind application, driven flush into the nail zone. Overdriven nails cut the mat; high nails miss the course below entirely. Both look identical from the ground until the wind finds them.
- Drip edge and rake edge. The metal edge that stops wind from getting under the first course at all.
- Ridge and hip caps. The highest-pressure zone on the roof, and where cut three-tab caps used as a shortcut come off first.

Springfield, Greenbrier, Cross Plains, Coopertown, Orlinda, Adams and Ridgetop administer permitting inside their own limits, and the requirements are not uniform. Note also that White House and Millersville straddle the Sumner County line, so a mailing address alone does not determine jurisdiction.

I lost shingles in a windstorm. Is that automatically an insurance claim?
Not automatically. If the fastening was correct and the wind exceeded the shingle’s rating, that is a storm event and we document it for your carrier. If the shingles came off because the starter course was faked or the nails were high, that is an installation defect — a different conversation, and on a roof we installed, covered work. Do you work on barns and agricultural outbuildings?

No. Springfield is roughly 35 minutes from our shop up I-65, well inside our service radius, and we serve it directly rather than subcontracting.
What wind rating should I ask for on a new roof out here?
Ask two questions instead of one. First, what is the shingle’s rated wind speed. Second — and this is the one that gets skipped — will it be installed to the manufacturer’s high-wind application, meaning six nails per shingle and a proper factory starter at both eaves and rakes. A high wind rating installed to the four-nail minimum does not perform to its rating.
