What Is Shield Coverage?
Shield Coverage is ROOFWORX’s 10-year workmanship warranty. It covers how your roof was installed — the flashing, the fastening, the ventilation, the details — and it transfers to the next owner when you sell your home. It is included on every roof replacement ROOFWORX installs in Middle Tennessee at no additional cost, and it sits alongside your CertainTeed manufacturer warranty so both the material and the labor are covered by name.
Why Workmanship Coverage Matters More Than Material Coverage
Here is the part most homeowners are never told: modern architectural shingles rarely fail on their own. Manufacturing defects in a product like CertainTeed Landmark are uncommon, and when they do occur the manufacturer generally handles them without much argument.
Roof failures overwhelmingly start somewhere else — at the transitions and penetrations where installation judgment matters:
- Flashing. Step flashing that was reused instead of replaced, or caulked instead of woven into the shingle courses, at chimneys, sidewalls and dormers.
- Valleys. Improperly cut or under-lapped valleys that channel water underneath the shingle field.
- Penetrations. Pipe boots, bath fans and satellite mounts sealed with nothing but sealant, which dries and cracks in Tennessee’s heat/freeze swing.
- Nailing. Overdriven, underdriven, angled or high nails — the single most common cause of shingle blow-off in a straight-line wind event, and the single most common reason a manufacturer denies a claim.
- Ventilation. Intake and exhaust that were never balanced, which cooks the shingles from underneath and shortens roof life by years.
- Underlayment and ice barrier. Missing or short ice-and-water barrier at eaves and valleys, which several Middle Tennessee jurisdictions require by code.
Every item on that list is workmanship. None of it is covered by a standard shingle warranty. In fact, a manufacturer warranty is typically voided by improper installation — meaning the homeowner is left holding a warranty that no longer applies and a contractor who may no longer be in business. Shield Coverage exists to close exactly that gap.

What Shield Coverage Does Not Cover
An honest warranty tells you its limits up front. Shield Coverage does not cover:
- New storm damage — hail, wind, falling trees and impact events. These are insurance events, and we help you document and file them under storm damage and insurance claims.
- Manufacturing defects in the shingle itself — those fall under your CertainTeed warranty, which we register on your behalf.
- Damage caused by other trades working on the roof after us (solar installers, satellite, HVAC, gutter contractors, painters).
- Structural or decking failure that pre-existed the installation and was disclosed to you before work began.
- Damage from foot traffic, pressure washing, or homeowner-applied coatings and sealants.
- Portions of the roof we did not install, on a partial replacement or repair-only scope.
- Neglect — clogged gutters, overhanging limbs, or ignored maintenance that causes an avoidable failure.
Every Roof Gets a Shield ID
When ROOFWORX completes your roof, your property is assigned a unique Shield ID. That record links your address to the scope of work, the products installed, the crew, the completion date, and the photo documentation from the job.
Practically, that means you never have to prove anything. Call us in year eight with a leak and we already have the drone photos, the material list and the ventilation calculation from the day we finished. It also means a future buyer, home inspector or insurance adjuster can verify the roof in one phone call — which is worth real money at closing.
Transferable When You Sell Your Home
Most workmanship warranties in this industry die the moment the house changes hands. Shield Coverage transfers with the property for the remainder of its term, at no cost, with no transfer fee.
In a Middle Tennessee market where buyers and their inspectors scrutinize roof age hard, being able to hand over a documented, still-active workmanship warranty from a licensed contractor removes one of the most common negotiation levers used against a seller. CertainTeed SureStart PLUS
ROOFWORX is a CertainTeed ShingleMaster credentialed contractor. That credential is what makes the extended SureStart PLUS warranty available on your roof — it cannot be offered by an uncertified installer, and it requires that the roof be built as a complete CertainTeed Integrity Roof System rather than a shingle laid over whatever was already there.
SureStart PLUS adds manufacturer-backed coverage on top of the base warranty, including a period during which CertainTeed itself stands behind the installation labor. Coverage tiers, term lengths and the prorated versus non-prorated schedule vary by product and by the tier selected at registration, so we walk you through the exact terms that apply to your roof and give you the registered warranty document in writing rather than quoting numbers from a brochure.

How to File a Shield Coverage Claim
- Call (615) 934-5732 or email roofworx@fixmyroof-tn.com with your address or Shield ID. If water is actively entering the home, say so — that moves you to same-day response.
- We pull your file. Your Shield ID brings up the original scope, photos and materials before we ever leave the shop.
- We inspect at no charge. Typically within a few business days, sooner for an active leak.
- We tell you what it is. If it is workmanship, it is covered and we schedule the repair. If it is storm damage, we document it for your insurance carrier. If it is a material defect, we file with CertainTeed on your behalf. You get a straight answer either way.
- We make it right — labor and materials included, no deductible.
Keeping Your Coverage Healthy
Shield Coverage does not require a paid maintenance plan or annual inspection purchase to stay active. It does ask three reasonable things of you: keep gutters clear so water is not backing up under the eaves, keep limbs trimmed off the roof plane, and call us before you let another trade fasten anything through your roof. Roof washing should be soft wash only — pressure washing an asphalt roof strips granules and will void coverage on the affected slopes. If algae streaking is the issue, our soft wash roof cleaning is warranty-safe.

How much does Shield Coverage cost?
Nothing extra. Shield Coverage is included on every roof replacement ROOFWORX installs. It is not an upsell, an add-on line item, or a third-party service contract.
How long does Shield Coverage last?
Ten years from the date your roof is completed. Your CertainTeed manufacturer warranty runs considerably longer and is registered separately.
Is Shield Coverage really transferable?

What is the difference between a workmanship warranty and a manufacturer warranty?
A manufacturer warranty covers defects in the shingle itself and is backed by CertainTeed. A workmanship warranty covers how the roof was installed and is backed by the contractor. Most leaks are installation-related, which is why the workmanship warranty is the one that usually matters.
Does Shield Coverage cover hail or wind damage?
No — new storm damage is an insurance event, not a workmanship defect. However, if shingles blow off because of a nailing error rather than the storm itself, that is workmanship and it is covered. We will tell you honestly which one it is, and we handle the insurance claim documentation either way.
Do I get Shield Coverage on a repair, not a full replacement?
Repairs carry a workmanship guarantee on the repaired area, but full 10-year Shield Coverage applies to complete roof replacements where we control the entire system.
What happens if ROOFWORX is not around in ten years?
A fair question to ask any contractor. Two answers: ROOFWORX is a licensed, bonded and insured Tennessee contractor operating under license BC-A/r #85166, and separately, the CertainTeed SureStart PLUS coverage available through our ShingleMaster credential includes a manufacturer-backed workmanship period that is not dependent on us. That is a large part of why we install as a certified contractor rather than an independent one.
Where do I find my Shield ID?
It is on the completion documentation you received after installation. If you cannot find it, we look it up by property address in seconds.
Does an annual inspection cost money to keep coverage active?
No. There is no paid maintenance requirement. Our inspections are free, and coverage stays active without one.
